Refugees all over the world are fleeing conflict or extreme poverty by sea, risking their lives.

In September 2022, at least 77 people were killed when a boat carrying migrants from Lebanon capsized off the coast of Syria, prompting fears that the death toll could be much higher.

The incident was the deadliest so far as an increasing number of Lebanese, Syrians, and Palestinians attempted to flee crisis-torn Lebanon by sea in search of a better future in Europe. Tens of thousands of people have lost their jobs, and the value of the Lebanese pound has fallen by more than 90%, eradicating the purchasing power of thousands of families who are now living in extreme poverty.

People suffer from ongoing natural disasters, great poverty, and political unrest in other nations.

For many years, natural disasters, a severe social and political collapse, a deterioration in the economic and humanitarian situation, and an all-pervasive pattern of violence that has torn away at the social and environmental fabric of the nation have all contributed to Haiti’s internal weakness.

Challenges with humanitarian access are being made worse across the nation by the current situation. The ability of humanitarian actors to access vulnerable populations and offer help is a top issue. Along with improving the ability to identify the effects on vulnerable populations, coordination among UN agencies and with humanitarian partners also creates potential for quick action when the security situation allows.
